Self-doubt, rejection and writer’s block are a few of the many issues that plague writers of every level. But if you develop a positive and resilient mindset you will be able to overcome all of these challenges.
Having a positive mindset can help you:
Increase productivity
Improve writing quality
Enjoy your writing more
Believing in your abilities is half the battle.
The Power of Positive Thinking
Negative thoughts and self-criticism can disrupt your writing progress. They will definitely keep the pursuit of your purpose on pause if you let them. Learn to reframe your negative thoughts into positive affirmations.
Instead of saying, “This post sucks.” Ask yourself if you've answered all of the questions that a reader may have. If the answer is yes, say, “I've done the best job I can on this post.” We can be our own worst critics. Hype yourself up.
Celebrate every small win and milestone. If you've published a piece every other day for a month, jump for joy. You've accomplished something that many other aspiring writers haven't done yet.
Building Resilience
In the writing world, resilience is the ability to have setbacks and keep on pushing. Continue to move forward. Facing challenges is crucial for growth. It's how you improve.
Don't just shut down after a negative comment or not so nice feedback. Learn from it and use it as fuel to continue to progress. I've learned that regret hurts more than rejection. I can't control how other people feel about my writing but I can control when or how I put it out there.
After self publishing my first book, I was too afraid to try again. I got a few reviews and made a few sales. It just didn't live up to my expectations. It took me 17 years to build up the confidence to give it another try. Don't let that be you. Learn from your mistakes and move on.
Practical Tips for Cultivating a Positive and Resilient Mindset
Reframe Your Mindset:
Visualization: Before sitting down to write, take a few minutes to visualize yourself completing a successful writing session. Imagine yourself feeling focused, inspired, and enjoying the entire process.
Gratitude Journaling: Show appreciation for your writing journey. Make note of things you're grateful for, like a supportive critique partner, a catchy phrase you wrote, or even just the time you have to write at all.
Craft a Positive Environment:
Create a Writing Space: Designate a space specifically for writing. This can be a whole room or just a corner of your desk. Decorate it with things that inspire you, like motivational quotes, pictures, or pretty flowers.
Remember Self-Care is Key:
Work-Life Balance: Writing is a marathon, not a sprint. Schedule breaks, socialize with loved ones, and pursue hobbies outside of writing. A healthy balance will prevent burnout and keep you coming back to writing refreshed.
Prioritize Sleep: Being well-rested is essential for focus and creativity. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night. If you're like me and sometimes sleep eludes you, have some go to activities that help you relax.
By incorporating these practices, you can create a more positive and productive writing experience!
Conclusion
Cultivating a positive and resilient mindset is essential for overcoming the challenges writers face. Remember, you can transform your writing experience by adopting these key practices:
Embrace a positive outlook: This boosts productivity, improves writing quality, and helps you enjoy the process more.
Develop resilience: Learn from setbacks, view challenges as opportunities for growth, and don't let negativity hold you back.
Prioritize self-care: Maintain a healthy work-life balance, prioritize sleep, and engage in activities that bring you joy.
By incorporating these practices, you'll be well on your way to a successful and fulfilling writing journey. So, keep writing, keep learning, and never give up on yourself!
Resources
My new book, Purposeful Pen, is now available for purchase on Amazon. You can get it in both ebook and paperback. If you decide to get it please leave a review. It would make me so happy.
Here's what to expect from this book:
March 2024, I created a daily writing challenge to basically introduce myself to my new blog readers. This challenge ended up becoming so much more as I responded to each day's prompt. I decided that I would do the challenge on Medium in the month of May. Mostly since the platform helped me with my writing journey the most.
This book is a result of the challenge. It's about pursuing my goals and purpose on my writing journey, I named the challenge Purposeful Pen. I hope I will inspire you to embark on your own journey or at the very least think deeply about the questions that I answer each day.
If you would like to participate in this challenge, there will be a workbook coming soon. You can do one prompt each day in order or you can pick and choose your preference for that day and dive in.
Until Next Time
Have a good day, good person and keep writing.
If you would like to see what I'm doing when I'm not here, you can always check me out on LinkedIn, X(Twitter), or my blog. I also post occasionally on Medium.
