The best writers write about subjects that they are passionate about. There are some that just follow trends. But you'll drive yourself crazy by constantly chasing the next popular thing. Build your business on something substantial that you will be able to talk about for years to come.
Trends come and go, don't worry about those shiny objects. If you stick to what you value, you will be able to put out content forever or until you get tired. If you want, you can dip into the trends but I suggest that you only interact with the ones that align with your passion and purpose.
Understanding Your Values
Last week we discussed core values. Here's the link in case you missed it. >https://purposefulwords.substack.com/p/identifying-your-core-values-and
It's important to have values because they shape you into the person you are meant to be. They help you make decisions that will guide your life. Decisions that will set you up for success in the present and in the future.
These same values should fuel your writing as well. The closer you are to a subject, the more you can help other people solve problems that you have already mastered. This will help you resonate with your readers.
Help them to see that if you can overcome an obstacle, so can they.
Identifying Your Passions
Your passions are those things that drive your creativity. They keep you motivated. What were your hobbies and interests as a child? You probably still like some of those things. I have a friend that loved video games when she was young. I think that's how she connects with not only her own kids but the many children she mentors. She gets more enjoyment from working with those kids than she does from her 9 to 5.
What ignites you? What activities are you drawn to that can help you in your writing?
The Intersection of Values and Passions
Now when you put your values and passions together, you have magic. I value knowledge and wisdom and I'm passionate about writing. So not only do I love writing just because, I like to help other people find what they are meant to write about.
When you figure out both your values and your passions, you've found your purpose in life. Now it's time to pursue it.
Embracing Authenticity and Connection
The more you include your values and passions into your writing, the more authentic it will be. People want to read real experiences from real people. I pay more attention to someone that talks about how they used to make bad decisions but now they are more thoughtful and intentional. You can tell when someone hasn't had first hand experience.
Even if you talk about someone else's experiences, you have to add your own opinions as well otherwise folks will feel like you have no idea what you're talking about and there's no way you can help them.
You want to build a relationship with your audience. You want them to trust you. If you have values, you won't tell them any old thing like it's true. People with value, value the people they are trying to help.
Taking Action
I encourage you to take action by aligning your writing projects with your values and passions. Think about what questions you had about a particular topic. What advice would you give you back then?
Purpose-driven writers don't just think about themselves, they think about other people. Continue on that journey. Make a difference in your readers' lives.
